GARDENING AS A TEACHING AID

Foundation Stage [pre school under 5`s, Prior to Key Stage 1 ]

Learn innovative ways of teaching the required learning skills, included in the curriculum, combined with learning about gardening, nature and outdoor space. Learn from a horticultural expert how to successfully link land based skills to the national curriculum. Learn how to provide each child with an appreciation of nature and the environment. Skills vital to our future generations.

Children's First Aid (paediatric)

This course is suitable for anyone who deals with young children, e.g. early years and play work practitioners. Attendees will learn how to react in an emergency situation with young children. This is a recognised programme giving a 3-year certificate and covers 12 hours of taught input. The course is aimed at meeting the National Standards and applies paediatric knowledge to the first aid principles as outlined below.

  • Resuscitation
  • Treatment of shock
  • Treatment of unconscious casualty
  • Bleeding, burns and scalds
  • Injuries to bones and joints
  • Asphyxia
  • Managing an incident
  • Penetration of bullet wound
  • Eye injuries
  • Poisoning
  • Record keeping and accident reporting
  • Infection control

Risk Assessment

To comply with legislation requirements i.e. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and to equip participants with the skills to be able to carry out risk assessments.

Objectives:

•  The evolution of the risk assessment process.

•  The legislative aspect of risk assessment.

•  Defining hazards, risk and dangers and showing the importance of their interrelationship.

•  Identifying ‘at risk' groups and magnitude of risk.

•  Ranking risks in priority order to facilitate management decision-making.

•  Analysing existing control measures.

•  Implementing new control measures.

•  Developing a safe system of work.

•  Monitoring and reviewing the risk assessments.

•  Delegates will be able to carry out health and safety risk assessments with knowledge of the current legislation in order to provide a safe working environment.

Tailor made to suit individual needs therefore duration can vary from 1/2 – 1 day.

HEALTH AND SAFETY (Foundation Certificate Level 2)

This course is relevant for early years and play work practitioners. It aims to raise participants understanding of their legal requirements for health and safety in an early years and childcare setting and how to apply them in practice.

Objectives:

•  An introduction to health and safety and the importance of maintaining health and safety standards within the childcare setting.

•  The candidate will gain an understanding of the legal requirements of the health and safety at work 1974, regarding risk assessment and the identification of hazards.

•  How to establish and maintain a safe and secure environment for children.

•  How to explain the different procedures involved in different types of emergency and what would be involved in an evacuation.

•  Develop an understanding of what your role and responsibilities are with regard to health and safety.

•  An understanding of your role and responsibilities in preventing accidents and illness within the work place.

PRACTICAL MANUAL HANDLING

Lifting Course for Employees

This course explains the problems associated with manual handling and sets out best practice in dealing with them. It provides useful practical advice for employers, safety representatives and individual employees on how to reduce the risk of injury from manual handling.

The first part of the course is about the theory of lifting and examination into what causes back pain.

The second part is a practical session when various types of lifting techniques will be demonstrated and practised by all course participants.

Playground Inspection and Maintenance

There are 40,000 injuries to children on playgrounds each year.

This 2 day course is aimed at those who are responsible for the operational (the one to three monthly) inspections and those in a supervisory or maintenance role.

A RoSPA Certificate of Training will be given to all participants who complete the course. Those completing the course will also be eligible to take the Register of Play Inspectors International exam for Operational Inspections.

Record each Childs attendance and have Excel automatically produce your daily/weekly/termly attendance figures, progression and staff records. Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (New) Level One Awards in Food Safety

•  CIEH Level 1 Award in Food Safety Awareness in Catering

•  CIEH Level 1 Award into Induction into Food Safety in Manufacturing

•  CIEH Level 1 Award in Food Safety Awareness for Retail

The Food Hygiene Regulations require all food handlers to be supervised and instructed and/or trained in food hygiene matters. The new CIEH Level 1 awards in food safety are run as half-day courses, suitable for a variety of candidates, including new employees with minimal or no prior food safety knowledge, employees handling low-risk or wrapped food or those who work front of house, such as waiting or check out staff, as well as back of house such as kitchen porters or warehouse staff.

The Level 1 awards are sector specific and the training programme has been developed to allow courses to be tailored to meet the needs of staff working in catering, manufacturing or retail environments.

Objectives

The training programme covers the following topics:

  • Food Safety (food hygiene, hazards, responsibilities)
  • Personal Hygiene
  • Cleaning
  • Contamination
